GOOD
CITIZENSHIP
Meaning of
good citizenship: A citizen is a legal member of a state. Such
a person has certain rights and privileges which foreigners residing in the
country do not have. E.g. right to vote and be voted for. But since Rights come
with responsibilities, the citizen also has his or her own share of
obligations/duties. Thus, what determines good citizenship is the fulfillment
of these duties.
The duties
of a citizen: (1) obedience to the law (2) payment of taxes (3) allegiance to
the state (4) to vote during election (5)to fight in defense of the state in
times of war (6)to prevent crimes by reporting intending criminals to the
police (7)to facilitate justice by not withholding the truth about a case.
Peter’s
message on the duties of good citizen (I Peter 2:13-17): Apostle Peter
encourages us to obey the state laws because the governors are there to punish
evil doers and reward the good. It is the will of God for us to convert others
by our good deeds. We are free in Christ, but let’s not use that liberty
maliciously. Honour all men, love the brotherhood, fear God and honour the
king.
Our duties
to those in authority (I Tim 2:1-4): (1) To pray for them: we as Christians should
always pray for those in authority for God to give them the wisdom to lead his
people, and also for God to protect them from evil doers. (2) To obey them: We
also have the duty of obeying the authorities so that we will not be a
stumbling block to the developmental projects of the society. (3)To admonish
others to obey: we should teach others to obey the government without
unnecessary tension.
