THE PRESS: The printing
press is a machine used to produce literatures in large quantities for public
consumption. It is one of the oldest medium of mass communication that is still
in vogue in this modern era. A lot of nationalists have used this medium during
their struggle for independence. And when independence is achieved, the press
is still relevant in nurturing the nascent democracy.
The activities of the
press in ensuring democracy
1.
Informing the citizens of the activities and new
policies of the government
2.
Educating the public about their civic rights
and responsibilities
3.
Constructively criticizing the government
4.
They give the public the opportunity to
communicate their grievances towards their representatives
5.
They carry out opinion poll to sample public
opinion on particular policies
Freedom of
Press
Freedom of the press is the right to circulate opinions in print without censorship by
the government.
Reasons for the
freedom of press
1. It
complements the fundamental human right to freedom of speech
2. It
is needed to sustain democracy
3. To
raise voice against social ills of the government
4. To
protect the human dignity of the individual citizens
5. To
facilitate popular participation of the citizens in government
How to ensure the
freedom of press
1.
By enshrining it in the constitution
2.
By having an independent judiciary to decide
when the government is violating that right
3.
By providing facilities needed for the press to
thrive
4.
By job security for journalist: this will ensure
that a journalist does not lose his job just because he expressed his sincere
opinion
5.
By not abusing the freedom through libel and
sedition
