3rd Term
THE PRESS: The printing press is a machine used to produce literatures in large quantities for public consumption. It is one of the oldest medium of mass communication that is still in vogue in this modern era. A lot of nationalists have used this medium during their struggle for independence. And when independence is achieved, the press is still relevant in nurturing the nascent democracy.
The activities of the press in ensuring democracy
1.       Informing the citizens of the activities and new policies of the government
2.       Educating the public about their civic rights and responsibilities
3.       Constructively criticizing the government
4.       They give the public the opportunity to communicate their grievances towards their representatives
5.       They carry out opinion poll to sample public opinion on particular policies
Freedom of Press
Freedom of the press is the right to circulate opinions in print without censorship by the government.
Reasons for the freedom of press
1.       It complements the fundamental human right to freedom of speech
2.       It is needed to sustain democracy
3.       To raise voice against social ills of the government
4.       To protect the human dignity of the individual citizens
5.       To facilitate popular participation of the citizens in government
How to ensure the freedom of press
1.       By enshrining it in the constitution
2.       By having an independent judiciary to decide when the government is violating that right
3.       By providing facilities needed for the press to thrive
4.       By job security for journalist: this will ensure that a journalist does not lose his job just because he expressed his sincere opinion
5.       By not abusing the freedom through libel and sedition
