FORGIVENESS
Meaning of
forgiveness (2Cor 5:18-19; Heb 8:12): forgiveness means to stop feeling angry
with somebody who has done something to harm, annoy or upset you. When Adam
sinned against God, God was angry with man. Even when Moses gave the law to the
people of Israel, they sinned and provoked God. But with the death of Jesus the
Lamb of God, God stopped being angry with those that have been redeemed by the
blood of Jesus through faith (John 3:16)
How to
receive forgiveness for one’s own sin (I John 1:9-10; Phil 1:1): (1) The
first step to receiving forgiveness for one’s own sin is to admit that one has
sinned (2) Contrition – be sincerely sorry for it. (3) Pray to God for
forgiveness. (4) Restitution/Penance
Jesus’ teaching on forgiveness
(Matt 18:15-17): Jesus teaches that if you have an unresolved issue with your
brother, you should first of all resolve it before you make your sacrifice to
God. The following are the process of dispute resolution recommended: (1) go to
the offender one on one and explain to him his fault (2) if he refuses to
reconcile with you, then take with you one or two other persons to him (3) if
he wouldn’t listen to them, then, take the matter to the church. (4) if he
wouldn’t listen to the church, then he would be treated like an infidel.
